VA Benefits for Veterans in Indiana

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs offers several benefits to military veterans and certain family members. Benefits include but are not limited to financial assistance, health care, education, and housing. In order to receive veteran benefits, one must have served for a minimum period of time and have been honorably discharged under good condition.

What Benefits Are Available for Veterans in Indiana?

Eligible veterans may be eligible for one or many of the benefits offered to them as active duty United States military members. Benefits include the Military Family Relief Fund, educational benefits, tax deductions, employment opportunities, and more.

Disabled Veterans Benefits

For disabled veterans, several benefits are available. Disabled veterans are those who have been injured while serving in the military, or whose health condition worsened while in active duty. Disabled veterans may receive one or more of the following benefits:

  • Health care including preventative, primary, mental, and specialty care
  • Dental care
  • Vision care
  • Nursing home placement
  • Hearing aids
  • Dependents’ health care

Military Family Relief Fund (MFRF)

The Military Family Relief Fund is an emergency grant fund that may be used by families for needs such as food, housing, medical services, and other essential family support expenses which may become difficult to afford.

Educational Benefits

Several educational benefits are available to Indiana veterans and their dependents. Eligibility varies, but for qualifying persons, the following benefits are available:

  • Tuition and fee exemption for children of deceased or disabled veterans
  • Supplemental grant for children and spouse of Indiana National Guard members
  • Tuition and fee exemption for Indiana Purple Heart recipients and children of Purple Heart recipients
  • National Guard Supplemental Grant
  • Indiana veteran and service member apprenticeships and on-the-job training
  • Reduced Indiana in-state tuition for veterans

Tax Deductions

In the state of Indiana, military service members are eligible for tax deductions if active or reserve military pay is part of their income. Additionally, active or former service members are able to utilize the tax deduction if they are over 60 years of age and were receiving military retirement or survivor benefits during that year. Tax deductions are also available for military spouses and disabled, retired veterans.

Recreational Benefits

Veterans in Indiana are able to receive unlimited admission to all Indiana State Parks. This includes state-owned recreation areas, reservoirs, forests, historic sites, museums, and other Department of Natural Resources facilities. Additionally, specialized hunting and fishing licenses are available for service-connected disabled veterans as well as active duty residents.

Employment Benefits

In the state of Indiana, honorably discharged veterans receive preference in state government jobs. Veterans with service-connected disabilities may also receive job placement and training.

Indiana veterans and their spouses are eligible to be buried at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located in Madison, Indiana.

Survivor Benefits

Survivors of veterans may be eligible for specific benefits. Those available to surviving spouses or dependents may include burial-related benefits, dependency compensation, death pension, educational benefits, health care, and life insurance proceeds.
